JD 430U pto type and operation

Hello all: I'm trying to figure out what type of pto my late S/N 430U has...a transmission operated or continuously running one. That would seem simple but it had a cracked bell housing and was removed/had a cover installed so I haven't ever seen it "right". Now I have the cover off and can see what the inner shaft is doing, and it doesn't make sense according to the operators manual.

This below is all with the tractor in neutral at slow idle. The manual states for a trans operated pto, to engage it you push the clutch and move the shifter to the left (as you're sitting in the seat). Okay, that works and I get a fast spin, assuming would be 540 at working speed, so far so good. But when I clutch and move the lever to the right to "disengage", when I release the clutch the pto shaft is still turning, though much more slowly...like maybe 50-60 rpm. The only time the pto is not turning at all is with the clutch depressed though the manual seems to imply it should stop when disengaged. Althougb this then would imply a "continuously running" setup, the manual states that you move the shift lever to the RIGHT to engage it, and mine clearly engages to working rpm when I move it to the left.

So is mine a trans operated type and there is something wrong because I cannot get the shaft to simply come to a stop when it is disengaged (i.e. some shifter fork broken or some clutch adjustment needed); or is it a continuously running pto and among other things I don't know left from right?

Thanks for any help

Sounds like you have the trans operated pto, it turning with the clutch down at slower speed, means the trans oil is spinning it. Lean a 2x4 against it, it will stop turning, one way to tell of lpto, hold the clutch all the way down, place the pto and trans in gear. When you let the clutch half way up the pto will turn under power, with the clutch more engaged, the tractor will start moving.

Thanks Cole...you solved both mysteries and I thank you sincerely. As there is no outer shaft assembly and I can only see the butt end of the inner shaft with the cover off, I couldn't lay anything 'against' it, but could push a dowel in alongside the stub. When 'disengaged' as a trans operated pto, the dowel stopped the stub from turning immediately with virtually no pressure. So my next quest is to find a new 'long' pto bell housing as the one it came with has cracked ears, looking like it was clobbered from above in time past. Do you know if a 430U can also accept/function with the shorter pto assy like other 430 variants? That original spec long housing pto with all that length-arm just begs to get torqued again doing the work we do, which is mostly plowing and light logging. Would like to rebuild an old bush hog and use the pto for it, and the short shaft pto option would seem less prone to getting in the way of trouble and busted off than the long one.

Thanks again!

I don't believe the short PTO housing will work on the 430U. I have one and broke the housing several years ago, I was going to try the short one but when I got dimensions it would have ended up interfering with part of the drawbar supports. I broke mine using a post auger and I think I had an overrunning cltch on it just because I didn't want to take it off. totally my fault, normally they are pretty tough. If you use a brush hog you do need the over running clutch on it. If just ears are broken and you have the ears get it welded up. Those long shafts were only used on a couple variants of the 430, 420 and 320 and are like "hens teeth" to find and expensive when you do. I have run one on a 320U for several years with one ear missing by using a large washer on the mounting bolt.
