4020 early 404-6 Rockers Wont Oil

In Frame rebuild, Pistons, Liners, lower bearings, and rebuilt head. 40 psi oil at idle. Verified port from oil pump to rocker assembly clear. Only small amount of oil to rocker assembly when running. Had to run copper line from oil sensor port to the end of the rocker assembly to get better flow. Works, but not like I wanted. The only thing I can figure is that the cam bearing is worn allowing too much oil to weep by so it never makes it to the top. The funny thing is that the tractor has been running with minimal oil to the rockers for years. I just never noticed until I ran it without the valve cover. I really don't want to have to split the tractor to get at the cam. Any useful advise is welcome.

Does the rocker arm have the rubber plugs or the "top hat" type steel plug? The rubber plugs get hard and the rear one can move in and plug oil hole in the shaft. Our 4020 had sticking valves do to this. If you can remember did the shaft have cotter pins in the ends of it, cotter pins mean rubber plugs. The old one come out easier then the new ones going in.

Top hat R54565. I went thru a few trying to perfect the custom oil line.

With oil pump and rocker assembly removed used air on the rocker oil port and barred the engine over until the cam oil holes lined up. then oil and air could flow thru freely.
 
Just curious if you looked down the oil hole on the block when the head was off to see if the cam bearing spun a little bit or was installed poorly.
 
No, I didn't know it was an issue till I got it running. That's why I checked it with air. If it was installed improperly or partially spun then it's been that way for years. I did the In-Frame because of poor starting and lots of blow by. I've been hoping I wouldn't have to split it. The external line I ran is oiling better, but not perfect. I've heard of this issue on several tractors. Thought I might be missing something. Wish someone had the magic answer. But it's looking like I'll have to take it completely apart.

I can't imagine the factory oiling circuit, even with new & properly indexed cam bearings, providing as good of flow as your aux. feed line.

Can you define "not happy" with respect to the oil pattern coming from the rockers?

IMO as long as there are no rocker arms that are completely dry & there is at least some oil dripping off the top off each one that should be good enough?

Can't help much with your issue as it's
been too long since I have been in to one
of those. I don't remember ever having one
that produced an abundance at the rockers.
As long as they are wet and you get a drip
now and then they are fine.

Looks like you went a little overboard on
the line. Back in the day we added those to
automobile engines from the 50's fairly
often due to passages getting clogged. We
used lines the same size as the plastic one
you have in the pic.
 
I?ve ran my 3020 and 4020 both with the rocker
covers off and there is not that much oil sent up
there .
