working on a "b" john deere, needs rod bearings. they say to use mdl. 50 rods and inserts, has anyone reworked the original rods to take the inserts ? if so, what did you have to do.

If you are in Ohio. Take ( or ship ) your old rods and shims to Center Automotive in Akron Ohio. They machined a set for me years ago to accept the inserts. I forget the cost ? at that time it was less then buying used 50 rods. I still had to use the thick steel shim on each side so as to keep them to the correct size. They can do the crank too.

You may get away with that swap...IF the Rod Journals are still Round...

Babbitt is far more forgiving than inserts when it comes to out-of-round journals...

I personally like babbitted rods in these old tractors. Lots of places will rebabbitt them for you and then you adjust with the shims.
Just google rebabbitting connecting rods and call some places.
