420-W Transmission Noise

My slant 420W (s/n: 134XXX) has alot of really loud clattering/clanking noises when driven in 4th and 5th gear. I haven't even popped any covers to peek inside the trans yet but some other posts mention shimming the ring & pinion. Before shimming, I like to upgrade whenever possible. I seem to remember a post where someone said you could use the ring & pinion out of an early 1010 as an bolt on upgrade to the 420/430 existing unit. The s/n of the 1010 had to be under a certain number. It's been a long time since reading that post and it's entirely possible the post was referring to a 430 only. Does anyone remember a similar post and if it would apply to my later 420W? Thanks.

Thanks B&D for filling the blank spots in my memory. What is the difference between the 420 and 1010 ring & pinions?

I hate to rain on your parade but bet you a cold one it is not the R&P unless you have broken some teeth off.

Why don't you take the back off the case and look the R&P over? you can even check the back lash and gear mesh while looking in there.

I had a slant steer that made a big clatter when throttled up in 5th. Never did find it, but when I gave up and sold it, I was thinking a final drive was the only source left to look at.

Thanks for the advice and possible bad news Dave. I hate to hear it, but I appreciate the heads up. Mine is the same way. When throttled up in 4th and 5th gear it makes quite a bit of clattering/clanking noise going down the road. So much that my neighbor asked me about it one day. "Is everything alright with your tractor? It sure is making a loud noise." Thanks again.
