JD 80 Powr-Trol Question:

I took my 80 out yesterday to disk a section of the property that had just gotten some dead trees removed. My disk has a single acting cylinder and I've pulled it with a 70, 70D, and the 60 numerous times and works great. It looks like I have to hook up two hoses (power up, power down) on the 80 vs. just the one hose like I've used on the other tractors. It easily raises the disk, but when you drop it, it has a squeal in the hyd. system while you've got the level in the lower position. I looked in the operators manual to see if there is an adjustment on the Powr-Trol and nothing is shown. Can I run a one way cylinder on the 80?

Do you have single or dual hydraulics (two levers or one)?
If single hydraulics (one lever), by the hydraulic output adapter to the left, there should be a tall 9/16" cap nut. Under the cap nut is a long screw and a jam nut. Loosen the jam nut and turn the screw in until it stops. Tighten the jam nut an reinstall the cap nut.
Should have made your hydraulics single acting. Doing this from memory... May be the screw all the way out... Put it the opposite of how it is now...

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]POWR-TROL SYSTEM[/b:654c4848f0] illustration below.

Note that the bottom oil line coupling (supply) is connected to the remote cylinder.

Both of our balers have a "[i:654c4848f0]single acting cylinder[/i:654c4848f0]".

The single oil line from the baler is connected to the bottom oil line coupling on a Model 70 tractor.

Take a look at the oil coupling on "John W" our 1956 Model 70 diesel.

Take a look at the oil coupling on "15" one of our 1953 Model 70s.

Determine which oil line coupling is the "[i:654c4848f0]supply[/i:654c4848f0]" on your Model 80 and then connect the single oil line from disk.

No, it has a pair of levers and 4 hoses with quick couplers at the back. One handle for the first pair of hoses and the 2nd handle for the other pair. The Powr-Trol on the 80 doesn't look anything like the ones on the 50-60-70. I'll try to get a picture of it.

Hi James, it doesn't look anything like that on the back of the 80. That's whats throwing me. I do have my 50, 60, and 2 70's plumbed in just like your pictures show. Those work well on the single acting cylinders. The 80 though, sounds like it's set up for dual acting only because it raises fine, but when you lower it, it squeals in the hydraulics and it looks like it's trying to send oil out the other hyd. line that I don't have connected to anything because it jumps when the lever is moved. That is the one, I think, that would be connected to the top side of the cylinder to "power down" if it was a dual acting one with 2 hoses. Right now, it sounds like it's dead heading at that quick coupler when you try to lower the disk since the oil has no where to go. Here is a picture of the back of the 80. It doesn't look anything like the 50-60-70 and I can't find anything in the 80's manual to read up on it. There aren't any caps or adjustment screws on the housing. Pat in Montana.

Pure speculation on my part, but you might disconnect the hydraulic line that is not being used.

Take a look at the information below.

Your 80 had the dual hydraulic box, and they can only be used with dual acting cylinders. There is no adjustment for a single acting.

If you had a single (pair) Powr Trol, it could be adjusted to work.

From one of your pictures it looks like you added the second set of hoses, I just did the same to mine a while ago, it was never equipped with them.

Pat, IMHO, for occasional use you can use it the way it is, it's simply bypassing like it does if you hold the lever for a few seconds after a double-acting cylinder has reached the end of it's stroke.

If you were going to use in on ACRES, and raise and lower it A LOT it would heat the oil over time and (obviously) put a little more wear on the pump.

Two "wprkarounds"...
Can a second hose be added to the cylinder on the disc?

If NOT, you can stab a second coupler/hose into the unused port on the tractor and return it to the hydraulic oil fill port.

Brandon, yes that is what I have decided. 2 way cylinders or nothing. When I took the Powr-Trol housing off 2 years ago to work on the rear end gear, I cleaned it up and found that it had a 2nd pair of ports for another cylinder. The linkage was frozen and the 2nd handle had been cut off with a torch 20 years ago. Fab'd a handle, got the linkage free to run the other spool on the valve body and then put in a short set of new hoses and quick-couplers just in case I ever needed them.

Bob, what I did Sunday was just leave the disk down because I had plenty of room to turn around at the ends. Didn't like to hear that awful squeal every time I lowered it. Anyway, I went out and put a 2nd hose on that disk cylinder. It was a 2 way cylinder with a vent in the top port. Hooked that hose to the other hyd. quick coupler on the 80 and the squeal went away. It's quiet as can be now. It's power up, power down, and actually raises the wheels off the ground completely while you're disking instead of before where they were always just floating on the top of the soil. I think I like it better this way than before! And I learned something.

Both my levers were still in place, just solidly stuck, it took quite a bit of penetrating oil and torching to get them free rotating!

One of the articles on the 80 I've read mentioned that if ordered with single or dual hydraulics they came with the dual box no matter what, but only had the appropriate hoses. It seems to match what I've seen at shows. 80s that have the actual single Powr Trol box were retrofit after. The 80s had a unique hydraulic lever which is about the only way I can tell.
