John Deere H steering shaft removal

What is the secret in pulling out the long steering shaft from a 1940 John Deere H? I removed the large nut but the shaft won't budge. Is there a snap ring buried in the housing? Thanks for your help.

NOT sure what you are doing, the worm and shaft "screw out" frontwards after removing the cover at the front.

The steering parts of your 1940 Model H are similar to the steering parts on our 1939 Model B.

Take a look at the photos below of one method of removing removing the steering shaft.

Hope this helps.

Be careful when you reinstall the steering shaft. The rearmost bearing can slip out of place. Use some heavy grease on it to try to hold it in place. You won't be able to tell if the bearing does slip out of place so don't use the 2 screws on the bearing cap to force the cap in place. If the bearing slips and you force it you'll crush the bearing.
