Some 1955 John Deere 40 3 point hitch questions.

I just picked up a 1955 model 40. It has 2 3 point hitch levers. It has 2 different lifts. One is for the 3 point hitch and the other was for the lift of the belly mount sickle. I took off the belly mount. My question is what is the lever on the left side under the seat do? and I had to pin the 2 different lift arms together to get any lifting power. If I have the lever under the seat one way the 2 lift arms move individually but has no power. If I pin the arms together and have the lever the other way it will lift the world.

Reviewed the [b:654c4848f0]OPERATOR'S MANUAL OM-T2-455 JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL 40[/b:654c4848f0] in the [b:654c4848f0]OPERATING TRACTOR[/b:654c4848f0] section under the [b:654c4848f0]DUAL TOUCH-O-MATIC[/b:654c4848f0] on pages 27 and 28.

Take a look at the information below.

The Touch-O-Matic selector lever allows the use of the two cylinders independently.

This is the 2nd way discussed above: [i:654c4848f0]Parallel Cylinders with Load-and-Depth Control[/i:654c4848f0].

Hope this helps.

Many thanks, Will read this again after work. I'm glad I asked, due to possible damage if operated incorrectly. I'm the second owner of this garage kept tractor and want to keep it good. I have the original sales receipt from 1955. I also have a 1958 JD 620 and a 1956 Farmall 300.

You might consider purchasing an operator's manual for your Model 40.

As mentioned above, the correct manual for your Model 40T is [b:654c4848f0]OPERATOR'S MANUAL OM-T2-455 JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL 40[/b:654c4848f0].

It does, I see Steiner Tractor has a reprint available. I have the books for my JD 620 and the Farmall 300 but have not picked up anything for this tractor yet. Thanks.
