I know the firing rotation, but starting from the front by the radiator are the cylinders numbered 1, 2,3,4?

The reason I am asking is that I thought I would take a minute and find the TDC on cylinder 1 just to rule out plug connections on the dist cap issues. So I advanced the engine (2 teeth at a time) through the timing port and waited for the screw driver I had stuck in the hole to top out (can't get a finger in there due to alternator). It appears as though the plug wires were 1 dist cap connection off. That plus the carb being dirty, the fuel not flowing, the fuel pump not functioning, the dist cap had a chip off one of the contacts up top, the key switch and starter button wiring loose...among other things......made for a rough running engine that started hard and would die when accelerating.

Once I get the rebuilt carb back....IT BETTER RUN LIKE A TOP!!!!

The hard starting when hot and stumbling when given throttle are the "normal" for the JD 20 series gas engines.

I had a JD 3020 gas I did chores with for years. When the gas changed in the early 1990s it started giving me trouble. I spent thousands of dollars rebuilding the motor, rebuilding the carb., new distributor, switched it to solid state ignition, etc. You had to keep the fuel mixture rich for it to take throttle. Then you would foul spark plugs in just weeks. Finally I threw I the towel and replaced it with a diesel.

So after looking at the manuals it states the flywheel turns counterclockwise looking at it from the rear. That means the rotor is the same so I have plug wire order wrong. I will look for the TDC mark for #1 and then place the plugs in the correct order counterclockwise.

Well...Put the reconn'ed carb on, found TDC on the engine (stamped on the flywheel...duh) so I had the #1 plug position, found out the firing order and set the plugs so it followed the counter clockwise rotation of the engine. Cranked it up and it is running great!!! ...so far.
