4020 battery setup

My old 4020 has original 24v system. Postive and negative are tied to chassis ground. Should ground be used? Books show just a cable. Always worked but hard on cable ends.

The electrical systems on later serial number tractors used a crossover "jumper cable" from the (-) post on the right-hand side battery to the (+) post on the left-hand side battery, than a fuse or fusible link from that common connection to the chassis.

Was safer (fire-wise) if certain shorts would occur, but has NOTHING to do with post or battery cable end life.

If the cable ends and battery are in good condition, and the bolts are able to properly clamp the end to the post no won't have cable issues.

These start from poor connections. Prevent those and no more burned posts cables.

I believe change was made at s.n. 091000 (1965).

Some older ones were updated over safety (fire) concerns, apparently.

I have had several of those. I have two now and they were so much trouble, mine are 12 volt now. Always dead batteries, melted posts, hard to jump start. Spent about $400, and no more problems.

I had one do that on my 4020 and i was standing right by it cut my face and my ears rang for 3 days . Found pieces of the battery 100 feet away
