What Size hydraulic cylinder for 490 planter

What size cylinder does a guy need to put on a 490 planter to make the lift mechanism work for planting ? 3x8??? Just acquired one which needs some TLC but it is missing the cylinder.

Depends entirely on the lift capacity of the tractor. Some Farmals as I understand only had a less than 400# system and with that you might need a 3.5" or Deere A cylinder. Now a Deere A or B tractor a 2.5" Deere B cylinder will work better as it will raise and lower faster. So again depends on tractor. Now back of an AC WD you might only want a 1.5" verry high pressure cylinder. Your question is like asking how deep is the lake. Need the extra info to give a reasonable answer.

Fred: The cylinder isn't "missing". It never had one. In those days, the cylinder stayed with the tractor and moved from one implement to the next, which is why old tractors often have some sort of hook on the back- it's for hanging the cylinder when not in use.
