Hi all, looking to see if anyone could provide info on
JD model 40u. Have owned and run a lot of old iron
but never a Deere. There?s one of these for sale in
my neck of the woods for $2600. Comes with loader
(industrial type with central piston to control bucket).
Looks to be in decent shape minus some rot around
one of the rear wheel rim valve stems. Any thoughts
on reliability, repair ease, also lift capacity of the
loader? Would like to use this tractor to bush hog as
well as move wrapped round bales and clean out a
small barn every spring. Thanks in advance.

That tractor only has about 20 HP and is pretty light weight for moving round bales, your front end isn't going to hold up for long with any large weight on it and your 3 point would not lift a bale with a bale fork,I would look for something closer to 40 horse if it was me with power steering and then I would only move small round bales. That tractor was only made for about 3 years for a reason.Just my 2 cents worth.

It looks to be a decent little loader with a standalone, hyd. system & "live" pump.

That said, the lack of power steering & size / weight of tractor in general does not make it a good candidate for your application........

Assuming the grill cover is original, it is an early 40U. The steering box was upgraded (made a poor gearbox into a fair gearbox) during the production run.

Lack of power steering makes this a poor fit for moving round bales. Very hard to steer with a full loader.

Parts are easily available, engine is solid.

5' bushog will be all it could handle.

Thanks for the input. I know it?s not ideal for the situation but do you think it would work short term? The bales I feed are small, I roll them by hand into the pen so not more than 600 lbs. This year I?m lookin at putting out a bale once every 2-3 days as opposed to one per week. I plan to re-sell and trade up relatively quickly. Unfortuneately it?s the only loader close to me that?s in the budget right now.. I don?t do payments :)

I agree with JD Seller.

Assuming you'll be using some kind of a spear set-up, the weight of the bale will be beyond the bucket exacerbating the situation. It'd have to be a pretty darn small bale in order for that tractor / loader combination to handle it IMHO.

Short of being able to test the tractor with the bales you intend to feed, I would pass.

Thanks all, looks like I?d end up asking too much of it. Will have to keep my eyes open and keep looking. Cheers.
