Hydraulic Problems John Deere 2240

Looking for advice on hydraulic problems for John Deere 2240. When using either lever to raise up sometimes it is smooth and works fine. Other times it chatters and is slow to raise and choppy. The same happens on the three point the reaction is the same. Changed filter check hydraulic oil check all hoses and connections.

Haven’t check the hydraulic sump for debris on the stand by pressure how difficult is that to check?

I need to have a better understanding if I have pressure in using it for several days then I climb back on and then it starts acting up. Let’s say I check the pressure and the pressure is fine could it be probable in thinking it’s a relief valve.

Actually most closed center hyd systems such as your 2240 closed center hyd system relies on frt hyd pump stroke control valve to control hyd pressure not a relief valve.

Now I have a better understanding so it maybe possible that it could be the front hydraulic pump stroke control valve. Is my thinking on the right track?

Yes you're correct. Many times an internal high pressure leak will affect hyd operation. With 3 pt raised, engine running look in hyd filler hole behind seat for moving oil which indicates leaking 3 pt control valve seals.

Thanks so much this gives me a good foundation to start on your information has been very helpful will get back to you. In hopes I have fixed it....starting now with the onset of winter. Tx Jim Thanks again.

Tx Jim Did my diagnosis today. Yes oil is moving so the leaking 3 pt control valve seals...after looking in the hydraulic section In manual I’m not locating it would they list it under something else?

When we spoke before you mentioned in post that in diagnosing it would indicate 3 pt control valve seals are you suggesting the selector control valve. I believe this is were I confused in following the hydraulic diagrams. It would be the tech manual.

Actually leaking 3 pt control valves &/or scv(rear hyd valve) can cause one to see hyd oil moving in hyd filler hole if scv return is routed to side of rockshaft housing as most tractors were when they left the factory

Studying the diagram I see now the location of each valve your talking about. In your educated opinion would it be best to start with the selective control valve then move to the rockshaft. The elimination process with hydraulics (past experiences) can become costly. In past was lead in the wrong direction hoping this time to have a good starting point it all costs money and time. Would value good solid advice. Have time but money is always an issue.

Yes remove hose between scv housing & RS housing. with scv lever in neutral no oil should exit open hose barb. If no oil exits barb then one needs to renew RS control valve seals.

This is a big help to me. Thanks would like to have this done before the dead of winter. Knowledge is power when it comes to things like this. Hopefully get back to you in a short period of time.
