51 JD B First Reduction Cover

I need to replace my worn clutch lever bushing and the outer bearing on the First Reduction Gear. Is there a trick to removing this cover. The big gear wants to wedge and the crankshaft limits how farm back I can move it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks Todd

Been ALONG time since I did those. Wish I could remember if there was a trick ? Sometimes taking a break and coming back later with a fresh outlook those type of things can go better. Hopefully after a break and you go back you will find just the right angle to get it off.

Hello Todd,
There are 2 short alignment
pins that extend from the
tranny case. The reduction
gear cover itself has a
"pocket" around the bottom
of the first reduction
gear. As I recall, pull out
on the case(heavy) to
release from the pins. Then
with some patience turn or
rock the case to find the
clearance point to slip it
over the gear. Trial and
error.Oh yes...the alignment pins stay with the tranny case. I'm a novice on this
but the online JD B parts
diagram was a help as was
the service manual. Hope
this helps. It is a heavy
awkward beast of a part!

The right brake assembly will have to come off it's like my JD 50.

On the 50, the whole case comes slightly off, then the front pivots outward and with a couple of twists and turns it's off. I would think that the B and the 50 would be about the same.

Here's instructions from the JD 50 repair manual - it might give you some ideas.

First Reduction Gear Cover [removal]

Remove clutch and pulley

Remove brake drum and brake assembly

Drain oil at plug in reduction gear cover

Remove sliding gear shaft drive shaft right hand bearing cover. Take out the cotter pin and remove the castellated nut. Remove reduction gear cover attaching cap screws.

Drive on the end of drive shaft with a soft hammer and loosen reduction gear cover from case.

Note: Cover must be worked off end of crankshaft as shown in figure 60-20-3.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give it another go when I get back this weekend. I did all the steps mentioned but couldn't quite find the sweet spot.
