John Deere A fanshaft bearing

Wondering whether the fanshaft bearing on a 49 A should have a grease zerk instead of the pipe plug that's currently there. Also wondering whether this is the original crankcase ventilation system or whether an update was performed on this A. My 48 B has a zerk and a inlet pipe running from the air cleaner so the setup pictured seems a little funny to me. Thanks,

Pete

They came with the plug. You're supposed to remove it, screw in a zerk, grease it per operator manual and replace plug. Most of us just leave it there, risking the ire of the correct police.

I don't know about the ventilation tube, but I think there should be one there going somewhere. It seems like they varied that a lot around that time. I've seen a lot of variety at shows etc.

That's the original breather system on the later A's. One tube takes filtered air to the pump at the rear of the fan shaft. Another sends crankcase vapor back to be burned.

k thanks just wanted to check that all was as it should be.

I think the pipe plug - replace with zerk was a dumaxx cheap route by JD. Who in their right mind would do this, yep, cheap farmers. I suspect the cost would be maybe $.10 extra - amazing !

Was it a cheap route or was it a way to prevent over greasing? Was there a specified time interval for greasing that bearing in the manual? I have seen plugs used in place of zerks in other applications that were to receive only installation and/or extended interval greasing. Kind of an attempt at idiot proofing?
