John Deere H

I have a John Deere H without electric start. I would like an electric start kit but don't know where to buy one. Anyway, what is the best way to shut the H off? Someone told me long time ago that I can use some type of switch that shuts the mag down. Any help is appreciated. Basil

You can put a switch in to ground the mag out. Personally, I like to turn off the gas and let it run out. Makes starting next time easier.

New Paris Tractor parts would have a electric start kit from a used tractor. www.newparistractor.com 844-214-3946. a button to mount on your mag to kill it would be available from www.brillman.com $8.75 plus shipping.

Your tractor will need to be above 27,000 ser # IIRC ? It has to have the main case with bolt holes drilled and tapped on the flywheel side to mount the starter bracket. If your serial tag is on the flywheel side your tractor is too old and it can't be added.

That's a lot of money, but it's because those parts are fairly rare and are very much in demand. Your other option is to keep searching and hope you stumble into someone who has them and isn't aware of their value on the open market.

Might be farther ahead to buy another tractor with electric start. They don't bring any more money with or without it. Swap the parts to yours or keep it and sell yours or keep them both ?

I agree with Mike M on buying another tractor.
New Paris has starter on ebay for $400 with bracket.
Looks like drive is not good. I don't know if they
are available again or not. When I needed one they
weren't.
There is a rebuilt one for $525. I think that is
about $100 below normal. Mounts are around $100.
Different dash, gauge, wiring, gen and reg, switch,
etc makes another tractor cheap.
Hand crank tractors are less trouble.

To stop engine, use toggle switch configure so contacts closed is off, one wire connected to mag points and other to ground. Works every time. Prevents unwanted starts. For electric start, find one factory equipped, less hassle and $. will try pix of kill switch on my H.

And then there's a different flywheel, a choke rod, and a reverse current cut out with mounting bracket, and Vee belt generator drive pulley on the fan shaft, etc.! I put electric start on an H I had. The project started when I happened upon the generator mounting bracket in a bucket of miscellaneous parts on a hayrack at an auction. I pretty much made, with Dan's input, the new tool box required to get the battery in. Same for the shield over the Bendix. I rebuilt a starter I found and came to the conclusion that it was very similar to, if not the same, as was used on Chevy's of the same era. They're unique because the Bendix is cantilevered, no outboard bearing!
