I have a 41 John Deere B. Problem I have is the trans. Keeps jumping out of low gears . have to hold it in manually with my foot
then if you let go it jumps out. Of course it stays in high but then I have no reverse in high. I looked down inside and cant see
the problem except 1 gear that has some small chips in it. The old farmer who owned it before me had a bracket made to hold it
in low. that's not a good fix , and it looks like the bracket was on a long time. Any ideas ? Thanks.

Pay real close attention to the top shaft in there. It is 2 pieces and the bearing in the middle ( more on right side )are common to go bad. The gear on the far right is the input shaft it has gear teeth on the outside and little ones on the inside. This is where your hi -low happens. Good chance the little teeth are chewed up and on that model those might be the LOW position. The little bearing on the far right and it is in the reduction cover under the little 2 bolt cap controls the position of the input shaft. These are also a trouble spot and if bad and or flopping around can goof up the engagement of the gear teeth on the hi-low .

This is where the problem was on my 730. The small bearing in the reduction cover was fine, but the large bearing on the input shaft was shot, allowing the input shaft to wobble. Also the tapered bearings on the ends of the bottom shaft were very loose, allowing the shaft to drop down slightly. Had to remove shims from the right side bearing holder to get the slop out.

The real problem is the detent plunger does not set in the detent enough to hold the gears in place. I recontoured the detents on my 40 B about 15 years ago. For the last 10 years it is used to mow lawn and it has never comeout of gear. When I got it, hi/lo was wired to high and it slid out of gear just running around the yard. I made the hi notch a little too deep and it takes a good kick to get out of hi. I redid a 44B 2 years ago and it stays in gear but it is mostly show use. When you see the mismatch, you will know why the problem exists. I put a post about it maybe still in archives. I tried to get some pix of the 44 job. All the other theories are well, not much help.

Thanks ..that makes sense as I think it feels like the detent going to low doesnt go all the way in. I guess I will have to open it back up and take another look down inside . Im sure I have to get the parts out to fix it. Going to try to find your pics in the archives . So since I have to tear into it. whats it take to get the parts out ? will the parts come out the top or is there something else I have to do to get those bad parts out ? thanks
