I recently bought a John Deere 2140 and am trying to figure out exactly what I have. The serial number shows 352744L but according to tractor data that number predates the earliest serial number shown in 1980. Do I really have a 2140 or is this tractor actually a different model? I saw that number is in line for a 2040 but also saw the numbers are different for US versus European models. Not a whole lot of info I can find on the serial numbers. Anyone knowledgeable on these old Mannheim tractors?

Thanks

My list (printed from an official John Deere Service Bulletin shows 1979 production (first year) as serial number
320122L through 358314L so I would be quite certain yours is of 1979 vintage.
I am quite familiar with these tractors and am ready to weather another Mannheim bashing, :)

You have a pretty good tractor! 40 series came out in 1978 in the Waterloo
tractors, Mannhiems a bit later. Lots sold around here in Canada.

Thank you very much! Do you know how the 2140 differs from a 2750 or are they pretty much the same tractor?

There were 2 versions of the 2140:
Both had the 4239 turbo engine.

One was built from 1979 to 1982 and did not have the SG cab but an OPU cab made by Sekura (like the 5020 had Crenlo or Stolper cabs) that was not very comfortable. Also the MFWD driveshaft is on the left on those and the steering bar is on the front (older ZF front axle). At the time US still had the second generation 2640 (hood sloped forward), which would have been a 2040 in Europe. (Very confusing...)

The second version from 1982 to 186 is exactly like a 2750, with the SG cab (Built in the newly built Bruchsal factory in Germany), and the driveshaft for the MFWD is centered and they turn very very sharp.

Your 2140 was probably imported originally from canada.

Thanks a lot for the info, learned more on here than searching the internet for days! Makes sense it coming from Canada, was wondering how a European tractor would?ve ended up in Texas.
Any particular issues to look out for in this series?

Stick to the maintenance schedule and they are good for 10000 plus hours. Add a conditioner to the coolant and change it at the recommended intervals. The later 2140 series like the 2750 and 2755 were a better cold weather starter, but still liked a block heater. Put thousands of hours on a 2755, good tractor.

Thanks Ben, some of the stories about hydraulic problems worry me but hopefully this one has been maintained halfway decent. It only has 3000 hours so it should have some life left for an old tractor.
