Model 70 lp

Hello from the new guy!

My father-in-law has a couple model 70 lp tractors that he only occasionally used, toys mainly. His health deteriorated last spring and he recently passed away. My mother-in-law is still living, but isn't going to be spending any time on them. I would like to start and drive them now and then just to keep them from sitting and rotting away. I have helped him wrench on them a few times in the past, but don't really know anything about their operation. Can somebody give me a quick starting and driving tutorial?

Thanks!
Jeff

Out of fear if something untimely happened to me, my son's would be left without any guidance on how to start my old tractors, so I made a list of instructions, one for each model. Here is the one I made for the model 70 JD LP. Some reference to a 730 LP.

1955 MODEL 70 LP
This is a 12V NEGATIVE ground tractor (it has an alternator) with a battery under the seat. Similar to the 730 LP, but the LP fuel valves are on the left side of the LP tank. The fuel level gauge does work on this tractor. Turn on the VAPOR valve all the way. Turn the ignition (toggle) switch to ON. Be sure tractor is in neutral and brake(s) set. There is a choke rod on the dash of this tractor also and it sometimes requires choking. With the throttle lever about ? - 1/3 forward, engage the starter button on the floor board on the left side and the starter should engage. The engine oil check is also similar to the 730 LP. Fueling this tractor is also very similar to the 730 LP except for the location of the valves. The oil used in the engine is the same as the 730 LP; 10W-30 or 30W HD gas engine oil. The lights do not work on this tractor.

An added note you will not need to even worry about opening up the liquid valve for just driving around. IIRC that would only be needed for serious work.
I wonder if he had an operators manual laying around somewhere ? Those old manuals were usually good ones. Had nice safety cartoons too !
