Looked at a JD 40 tractor yesterday. Now have a question two

I looked at a Tricycle JD 40 yesterday and I really wanted to take it home but...

Ran fine 10 years ago and neglect took it's toll. Sitting outdoors the engine is stuck now and last run 10 years ago. No visible water in the radiator. When I cracked open the oil plug antifreeze was the first thing to come out. Everything else looked decent for the age. I know next to nothing on these two cylinder JD's. Guy is asking $950 prior to him seeing the antifreeze issue.

Any ideas on what is the most common issue on these engines? And are there any engines to be found at a reasonable price if need be?

I thought this could be a good tractor for my grandson and I to work on together and not stick a lot of money in the tractor.

I appreciate your knowledge here from the guys that have had experience with these tractors.

Much appreciated.

Dave

Keep looking 'till you find one without the obvious issues seen om this one. Don't fall in love too quickly. Unless it's one that's already fully restored, there'll be plenty of hidden issues on all of them to keep him entertained and pockets empty. Find one that runs well, on which everything works and you'll save lots of $ in the long run. Especially for a grandson, a wide front axle on the tractor would be a good idea - a safety thing.

Good running JD 40s can be bought now for the $2000-2500 range. So the one your looking at is just a parts tractor for someone now. Might be worth $500 if the sheet metal is good. Engine is junk. Either the head or block cracked from freezing. I would bet that the rear end has water in it too form setting. The where bad about it getting in around the gear shift.

It is a cute little tractor. But the common sense on YT has spoken. I'm going to pass on it.

To all. I truly appreciate your comments.

Agree.

Find an "[i:654c4848f0]ugly[/i:654c4848f0]" one that runs good and "[i:654c4848f0]spruce it up[/i:654c4848f0]".

There is one down the street that has been used as a kids toy at the corn maze. It looks good, but I never asked a price( mine are all RED)
