john deere b runs hot

we bought a 1946 b nice straight tractor it has a metal scroud around the manifold never have seen one the problem is it runs hot 220 in a very short while we drained the raditor and found like alge in it flushed it out with a lot of water it helped but still heats up in a short time none of our other tractor heat up that quick were at wits end with this we dont really want to tear it down we used a heat gun on it so we know its hot dont want to blow a head gasket any help thanks

The tin shroud around the manifold is a rare survivor. Most all rusted out, or were discarded, when repairs were made. It was there to help the manifold warm up, during cold weather. Remove the drain from the bottom of the block, and flush the block, good, and recheck your running temp.

I would drain the coolant out and fill with vinegar and run it till good and hot. Then let it cool and drain the vinegar out and then back flush it with a hose by way of the block drain

My 46 B also runs at 220 when I am cutting grass with it. Like others said get some good flush and cleat it out and it should be fine.

When I had my B apart I took a pressure washer and washed out the block and radiator. I don't think any amount of flushing could have got as much crap out as I did with the pressure washer. If flushing doesn't work for you I suggest taking the water pipes off and washing the top and bottom of the radiator and block.

Backflush it at the drain till it starts coming out the top of the radiator then pull your hose off and let it drain natural. Do it a couple times. I had a Farmall A that would literally steam in just a few minutes of idling. I flushed it with baking soda and flushing agent and had no success until I rigged up a hose at the bottom of the drain.

Are you running antifreeze? They will run hotter with antifreeze than water as it is heavier bodied and does not circulate and cool as well. Sorta like 10w30 versus 50 weight.
