1950 model D coolant in oil

Hey fellas,

As the title states I have a 1950 model d the big brother to my 48 bw

I have suspected water issue but was thinking it may be a condensation but now I think not. I have had water come out of the petcocks and a leaky exhaust gasket to the manifold, it wasn?t much at first but yesterday at the parade it seemed to lack some power and smoked more than I am used to. I opened the petcocks and there was a milky oil that came out. Also it seems to be seeping from the top cover around the crankcase where the water pipes come from the radiator to the engine where it bolts to it. It burns oil before this and the head gasket leaked externally off and on.

The question I have is from what I?ve read it?s possibly a gasket or the brass washers, cracked head? Once I tear it down is there anything I should also inspect or replace ? I love this tractor since I saved it from either scrap yard or part out. It is in great shape for the age and besides needing tires soon I plan on keeping it along time.

S/n 187820 if it helps.

I would suspect the head gasket, but you're going to pull the head to replace it, have your head magnafluxed for cracks.

I own several Styled JD "Ds".......

The coolant was leaking around the threaded STUDS....point at where the Studs Thread into the block that attach the Head to the Block......

As already mentioned,I had a head planned, so as head gasket would seal...

The flange that attaches to the top of the Block as you mentioned is leaking coolant.......this is probably due to corrosion....using water as a coolant:

I removed the water metering valve and use 50% distilled Water & /50..Water Glycol:

Thanks for all the replys. I will definitely have the head checked. While it is off. I was thinking about a compression check before hand to see about cylinder health. What would
Be accepted compression range? While I have it apart if it is needed I only want to do it once if possible. It does have blowby from around the clutch when it is hot also uses oil and it gets in the petcocks and will burn it off . I have had it a few years now but occasional use like parades antique pulls and dragging things around the property. Would love to get some implements and really use it ! Thanks again. Once I get it resealed and clean the radiator out I will do a 50 percent mix of normal antifreeze. It has some debris and chunks I have been flushing out.

I sure like the pictures in the snow.

Does anyone have good suggestions for parts? I have looked online and most say out of stock? Mother Deere? I will check YT again to be sure. Any to shy away from?

With the Head removed..........perfect time to clean coolant passages in Engine Block:

First JD "D" I removed the head....sludge and foreign material was blocking off 40% + of the block water jacket:

Rad Cap had been left off, Soup can loosely in Rad Opening:

(quoted from post at 21:03:26 09/10/18) OLSON GASKET for a good head gasket.

I have gotten quotes from external link, local Deere dealer and Olson’s gaskets. Is there any reason to use one vs another? I like Olson’s being somewhat local and all cut/made in the us, but I don’t want to use a lower quality gasket and have a leak. Olson’s seems like good quality, I’d assume Deere would be as well. Steiner would
Have some in a week or so.

How about the copper head gasket? Good or bead ? Anything to know from those who have used them?
