A few pages below this is a post titled Buying a 3020. The poster is pulling a loader off a 4020 and is considering buying a 3020 and putting the loader on the 3020. Several posters that I consider to be knowledgeable advise to forget about buying a 3020 and just get another 4020 for the loader. Some reasons are given for this opinion. My question- if the 4020 is significantly better than the 3020, why do they more or less sell for the same money?

I was thinking the 4020 is a better loader tractor, not thats its necssarily a significantly better all round tractor.

The better points of a 4020 over a 3020 for a loader are: 1 more side frame bolts. 2 longer frame for stability.3 heaver rear end. both have diff lock, basically the same hydraulic system, same transmission options..The 3020 engine uses a balance box running on the crankshaft for engine balance, not a bad thing but with time can be a fail spot, the 3020 engine is a loner, used only on 3010/3020 and 500 series back hoes,,so in the event of a block failure you are in line looking for parts, since the 3020 has only 4 cylinders it will be a bit better on fuel, but also lighter on power ( the pistons and rods are the same as a 4020)..With a 4020 you have an endless assortment of re-power units should you need to go in that direction plus a lot more power on hand for when it's needed,,also a bit more fuel use, but not a great amount of difference. I have used both on loaders.and misc. utility duty..I prefer the 4020..

Both of those tractors use the same front axles. The weakest point for both of them with a loader is the front spindles. Rough ground with round bales snaps them right off. The bright side is the loader makes it easy to pick the front up for repair.
