4010 Wide Front Question

Was the wide front for 3010 3020 4010 4020 the same front end unit for 4010 in 1960-1963 and 4020 in 1964 -1972. Were they all the same front end. Or was there a upgrade or revission, or a early style and a late style, sometime during the run while they where made.. From 1960 to 1972. (I am guessing the last 4020 was in 1972)

I have found out about the standard front hubs and the heavy front hubs

I have found a aftermarket or remade front end that has a heavy front spindle that is from 1 1/2 inch to 1 3/4 inch shaft, we are not sure if this was offered also during the original run of original John Deere wide fronts.

The 4010 does have a loader on it now and i dont know for how long, but we intented on useing it for light duty from now on. and it does have a Roto narrow front now.

Thank you for any help you may have.. stano

The only difference that I am aware of is the late 71-72's only had one bolt on each side of the center main casting instead of two. The heavy hubs were an option. I have done a lot of loader work with my 3020 and have never broke the factory front end. Tom

Are you wanting a factory correct show tractor or a good heavy duty front axle to use???? If your wanting a good heavy duty axle than order the HD wide axle from A&I. Depending one freight and what margin your A&I dealer wants you can get them brand new for $1600-1800. The parts will directly interchange with JDs.

You can also get a mounting bracket that puts the later 30-40 series front axles on them. This really makes it much heavier duty.

There is another different other than the hubs and bolts. The saddle that the center section has was made heavier on the later model JD 4020s. When the JD 3020s where used heavily for loader tractors we had guys that would break that center section.

I have seen a few that had the standard non adjustable front added for loaders as it was heavier. It seems the later JD front was improved but do know the A&I is much improved and the main frame is at least 25% thicker but generally the spindles and knees break first. Round bales and frozen or rough ground caused many failures even with good operators.I believe Beam made an adapter plate to install 30/40 style front ends which allowed 8 bolt hubs and they worked fine just not in collectors eyes.I have also seen Case fronts and had a 4020 that came with a 5020 type front that shortened the wheelbase and made it handier but looked odd. There were many Swartz wide fronts put on as they were much cheaper but actually hurt the resale value some as they were lighter but some got along fine just not loader friendly.I have had a few tractors that had narrow fronts and cant believe how handy they are in certain situations.

i was curiouw what actual points was that made A&I stronger. I will try and see the 25% stronger center axle. I have been with this tractor since 1963, it is a 1962..it was my dads, and we did not change to wide front because of cultivator, working the loader in the barn, and snow unloaded off to the side. and over the years dad just put that idea off of getting a wide front.. but now i have the 4010 and would like wide front even with the light use we will use it.

I probally would consider the AandI reman wide front. but only one vender has got back to me with minimum reply. i guess i will have to call on phone for infomation..

I was able to see the difference of the 71-72 main center castiong bolts with the one bolt and the two bolts ???? I did not know of this..

When i was younger, about late 1970's i remember two john deere wide fronts that broke, or i guess they bent, on the right side knee.. but i dont remember if they had loaders..

It seems like a lot of money just for having wide front????? BUT

Is there only one company that makes the afermarket wide front.. i would assume several may sell it..

It looks like there are several parts available for repairs.

thank you guys for you help. I now know more.. stano

i think i have found a picture of a aftermarket complete wide front less hubs, for sale by worthington. and i can see in the picture that the center main casting axle is much more heavier than the original casting wide front. and the spindles at the bottom part of the spindle shaft and at the angle part of the casting where the shafts presses into, looks bigger than the knee tube.. unlike the original. for me this is a lucky to find a picture?? thank you for your help
