How to find a good replacement instrument cluster for my 224

About 6 weeks ago, my tachometer stopped working and the hour meter began to spin wildly, although all the other gauges (temp, gas and idiot lights) worked ok. I located a used salvage item (JD part number AL31829) at a good price $189, but unfortunately the tach did not work on that one, so I returned it and thought I would buy a new one. Prices on Ebay and Amazon ranged from $215 to over $400 and all appeared to be reproduction items. I went cheap and received one where the tach and hours worked fine, but the lights were so dim as to be non functional. Returned that one and ordered replacement from same company; lights were better, but the seal on the guage was no good: a heavy dew filled it with condensate and the tach stopped working. Returned again and went to a different company more expensive: this one had the dial mounted crooked so the tach needle stuck at one end! Returned that one and got the last one (number 5!) This seems to work, but again the lights are dim. (On my original instrument cluster, the lights-generator, 4wd and so on are bright) All of these seem to be made in India. Thanks to return policies, I have got full refunds, but what a nuisance. I haven't decided whether to return this one or just to live with the dim lights (after all, I can figure out if I am in 4wd without the light) Sheesh. Anyone know a good repo guage that costs unde $300?
