Fan shaft stopped turning on Model 60

Headed out to bush hog yesterday and power steering stopped working after about 200 yds. The cooling fan blades had stopped turning. Shut the tractor off and spun the blades by hand. Started the tractor and ran it long enough to get back to the house and unhook the bush hog. Haven't turned a nut yet. Any guesses on what might have happened and what I might find when I get into it? Looked at the IT manual and parts list. Looks like a Woodruff keyed shaft and drive gear. Can I get that shaft out of the governor housing without taking the sheet metal and radiator off? I wonder if I should run it long enough to drive it into the garage. Thanks in advance for your input. Contributors to this forum are a fantastic resource.

There are splined couplers on that fanshaft good chance one may have stripped the splines out.

If you let it cool down I'm sure it won't hurt it to run for a few minutes, as long as it's full of coolant. Most new vehicles have thermostatic controlled electric fans and they don't start until needed.

Thanks Mike and Russ. Mike, the parts list looks like three splined shafts joined together with couplings. I guess it could be any one of those three or a sheared Woodruff key. I don't see how it could be anything else so I agree with you Russ, looks like driving it a short distance will be OK. Do either of you know if I can get it out without removing sheet metal or radiator. It'll be a few days before I can get into it.

You might not like the idea but with the hood off, job will be easier. Takes about 3 people to do it. With power steering, the lines to the pump off, IIRC, the pump and fan can be wiggled out. Try to slip some semi rigid material next to radiator so as to not damage it with the front of the shaft. HTH

Just relooked at orig post, no reference to power steer, so disregard that part of my comment. Hood off still applies. If it was apart last week, well maybe not but 50 years, it will be hard to get apart. Just be careful not to damage radiator..

. Are the fan clutch plates intact and able to slip slightly ? If someone welded or bolted the assembly solid . This will shear the fan drive .

The blades are intact but I don't know if they would slip any. They free wheel right now and I never tried to spin them before. What shears
on the fan drive in your experience? The Woodruff key or the couplers. I still haven't had the time to tear into this problem. Thanks.

Hi George, the tractor does have power steering and I appreciate your thoughts. A little power steering oil migrates out of the power steering pump are so I think I'll get into that while I have it apart. I'm going to follow your suggestion and take the hood off.

Love your part of the country. I spent about a year in the Geneva area managing the Elston Electronics plant in the 90's. Wonderful people and beautiful area.

Not if the blades intact, is the spring loaded clutch that drives the fan hub capable of a wee bit of slip ?

With pwr str, you will have to remove nose/grill assy. Then drain the pwr str, and remove the suction line--the rigid tube to get it out of the way, other wise you will be fighting it. yea, more work but trying to sneek the fan&pump out you will have enough to contend with without that in the way. Make sure to put something by radiator to keep from poking a hole in it. A piece of corrugated board, paper or plastic would work. May have to take radiator shroud and the pump support loose. With IT diagram you should be good to go. Email if you got a ?? HTH George

Hi again, I looked in the JD ps manual and says that air cleaner has to go, I forgot about that, and says that radiator has to be loosened and move a few inches, I suspect to get fan past the shroud. Ugh. If you are clever, you might devise some sort of clamp the compress the spring to maybe get the keepers loose and get fan off shaft, then leave it by radiator core and skip getting the pump out. Then, if that worked you can slip the friction discs in and reassemble without taking more apart. Assuming the discs failed, the test is if ps is still same and only fan not working. George

I had the nose off a couple years ago to rebuild the power steering. If I have any problems or questions, I'll get back with you. Thanks for your help.

This may turn out to be a winter project. Moving the radiator is the only thing that bothers me but I was wondering if that would be necessary. Thanks for the input.

George, I was also wondering if necessary, would it be easier to take the governor housing loose and slip it back. Or is that asking for trouble?

Sounds like your problem is more than a few moon keys...sounds like the whole assy has self destructed....remove whole assy from governor and then check the governor assy....I'd try to find a whole complete used unit that is good....

Everything else powered out of that box works fine, the governor, the hydraulics, the distributor are all working just fine. The tractor runs
great.
