John Deere B engine noise

I got a 50 B that the engine was stuck, I freed it up and have since gotten it running. It runs good but it makes a loud whirring sound from the flywheel side. Like say the noise a bad roller bearing would make. Gets louder with rpm, having the clutch in or out makes no difference. It seems to be more noticeable as the motor comes up to temp. What would cause this? Noise from something else carrying through the tractor? I did Change oil on it when I got it cause there was some water in it. It does have good oil pressure. Thanks!

Sounds like the governor/fanshaft gears. Pretty common for them to make a bunch of noise. How much slop does the fan have when you turn it back and forth? You might also want to verify that there's no blockage in the oil line going up into that housing because I'm assuming it sat for a while if it was stuck.

Check that the starter is disengaging when the engine starts. I had a B that made quite a racket for this reason. Otherwise, 620 John has some good advice.

take a long handle screw driver...use the handle end to your ear touch the engine in various places "not the fan" and you will be able to detect the location of the noise....but it sounds like cam governor area...could be other though...

I did double check the starter, that wasn?t the culprit. There doesn?t seem to be too much slop in the fan gears, probably an inch or 2 at the fan blade tip. Is the oil line for the governor on the inside? I just see the line to the gauge. Thanks guys

There is a fine oil hole in the governor case, one way to ensure that it is clear is to remove the oil gauge fitting from the governor case and connect shop air to the 1/8 pipe threads found in the governor case. Put shop air on it for 30 seconds, if you hear a pop and then whoosh you have cleared the upper end oiling hole. Otherwise you look around in that hole for a much smaller hole leading away to oil the fan gears. This oil galley is fed by an oil line from below, under the crankcase cover, it just does the oil gauge and this small feed hole that is very easily overlooked because of it's small size.
