is it recommended to use them or will it eliminate lubrication to the stem and guide with
todays dry gas??

I have had my 420w for 50 yrs and decided to find out why it smokes on start up, there are no valve seals on either in or ex and it hasnt been apart since I got it in '68, I see they are listed in JD parts for 16$ ea or so, Would ordinary umbrella seal work? what have others done ? thanks

Who said today’s gas is dry ? Gasoline vehicles going 300,000 miles without taking the heads or oil pan off is normal rather than the exception .
In the good old days with wet gas a vehicle was due for a total rebuild before 100,000 . And the internals were covered with sludge
