I'm rebuilding my front pedestal

and decided to replace the rubber on the vains. Well the first one went on just fine with grease. But 4 in a role have broken as trying to put them on. After 3 I took the fourth one to john deere and sure enough the 4th one broke. we tried boiling water, heat gun, heat lights, nothing is working is there someone who is good at this to give me more advice of what might work. John deere is sending me 3 more , I sure hope I can get one to go on. I read the book. all it says is replace it. HELP PLEASE. thank you

well that's what me and two mechanics are thinking, but I just wanted to know if anyone had a different way that might work. The book just says replace not worth a dime for this problem. thank you

Rick, as I recall I also put the vain in a vise to hold solid and use smooth screw drivers to gently work the rubber around the unit. I think some of those plastic radio/auto tools would be good...as recalled I gently worked the rubber not to abruptly tear it...but as we talked today it is a bear....they do have to fit snuggly....wish I could try my hand on it....best Chuck

Warm 'em up, slick 'em down with dish soap, rubber lube, or silicone grease, and gently "massage" 'em in place.

I assume you are dealing with the vanes, about 1.5 by 2.5 in., rectangle part. Just did them on 720, looks like same part on the 530. First one got the old one off but broke it, the second one got off intact. Used utility knife to go around the edges to loosen it. These were old well worn seals. Made sure the groove was clean. The new seals went on real easssey-pleeesy. First one was maybe a minute to put on. I had heard the horror story by PJH some years ago about this problem. The second one was on in less than 30 seconds. Just a lite coat of pwr steer oil on them. Here is one likely reason for your having difficulty---The seals, called packing in parts list, that I got, off the shelf at the local dealer, were date coded 25 Jan 18. New production item. If you got old ones that maybe the cause of the hard to install problem. Maybe the composition of the seal material was changed due to problem, maybe different vendor? All I can tell ya, is that it was so easy I might start a cottage business doing this job.

Square packings from john deere dealer were old-old. When that old, they are hard and when pulled to install will show cracks in packing and will break. Have john deere order new packings. They will be fresh and will stretch without breaking.

thanks for all the info, I broke 5 out of 6, took the next one to a friend of mine had it on in 15 seconds. maybe I learned something to soon to tell.

From conversations and text...tried to give you best advise...but nothing like hands on...sounds like your friend had the touch...like to see a video of it in operation....best Chuck
