We are trying to replace the clutch pilot bearing from the flywheel of a 1960 JD 430U clutch assembly. The flywheel has the bearing to the rear and a grease retainer to the front. Can the grease retainer be removed to be aid in the removal of the bearing? Any tips on removing the bearing for replacement?

To add, the tractor does have a reverser. Any tips for removing the throw-out bearing as well?

Pack if full of heavy grease. Find a dowel rod or whittle a broomstick to the id. As you drive the wood in the grease will push the bearing out.

If I remember right the pilot bearing must come out before the grease retainer can be removed.

The grease method may work and is worth trying, I do that with bushings. It will depend on bearing condition and the bearing seals holding the pressure that will be developed when the rod is driven in. If the grease doesn't work; there are pilot bearing pullers for bearings that go in side the inner race and expand. Parts stores and Harbor Freight should have them. Some parts stores rent or loan them. I have a hook foot for a slide hammer I normally use to pull bearings.

You should be able to slide the throwout bearing carrier off the shaft, turn it bearing up, support under the bearing, and either press or carefully tap the carrier out of the bearing as to not damage the carrier neck.

You can remove the flywheel and have direct access to he back of the bearing. Two springs hold the throwout bearing sleeve in place. Pop the springs off
and slide the carrier out to replace the bearing.
