I have a 1972 4620 power shift cab tractor, that I am considering converting the non-working r12 AC to R134. I did this to a 4230 a few years back and it has worked great ever since. I am looking for any advice from anybody that may have done this before. (please removing the cab is not an option for me). This is not my primary tractor, but I do like to get it out to use it. Thanks!

I would consider a Staden conversion from AP Air, they come with all the mounting brackets and a Hi/Low switch set up..I am not sure what AP Air offers for line replacement kits, but it's some thing you should look into, small line leaks are the demise of the AC performance, and those old style compressors are not good...

Hi Tim..thanks, yes I used the standen kit on my 4230 and like I said it works great...I was wondering about the lines, seeing they are 46+ years old. Thanks again

I think that it will not work out unless you replace the lines, pipes, expansion valve and receiver dryer. I put a lot of those AP Air conversion kits on and I always pressure test them with compressed nitrogen to be sure there are no leaks..a little leaks means it will only work good for a little bit...

Yes I was afraid of that. I guess I should start playing the lottery as it will get expensive fast...maybe I will drive it on cooler days

On the New Gen cabs the kits with all the lines, compressor kit, expansion valve and dryer run about $800,even with you older cab it will be in that area is my guess,,and some hydraulic shops can make AC hoses up from scratch too..it is possible to get some hoses that run from the compressor to the evaporator in one piece,,it would be less connections to leak..

With the age of the system, plus with the cost of r12 and difficulty getting it, I am considering upgrading the system

I use this company for my freon. It replaces R12 and you don't have to change anything. https://www.es-refrigerants.com

Been A while but i used an R12 substitute that I bought on ebay on a neighbor's JD that needed a shot each spring. It is called Freeze 12 and mixes right in there in the R 12 systems.
