John Deere R

Looking at buying a John Deere R the owner said it has a stuck fuel rack. How big of deal is it to free it up? Can you have it rebuilt or have to buy new ? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks

I just did mine one pump was stuck from sitting. It's very easy to do, gaskets from jd will cost you about 32 bucks. Flywheel gives you the timing marks, injector has it's marks, line them up and done. I don't like the jd service manual think the I&T manual is better. DON'T WORRY VERY EASY TO DO.

R is nice tractor good luck.

Roger, "stuck fuel rack" is a VERY generic term. In the case of an "R", the "rack" is a series of rods connecting the governor to two "rack gears", one on each plunger injection pump. The "racks" mate with gears that rotate the plunger/barrel in each injection pump to control fuel rate and fuel cutoff.

If something is gummed up/stuck preventing the rod sections from moving the actual "racks" it should be pretty easy to free up.

Trouble is, if the actual injection pump plungers and barrels get stuck, the effect is the same and can be a LOT tougher to get loose, also when you get that intimate with the pumps, it's easy enough to break or damage something.

What ever you do be SURE you know what you are doing and that the rack can move freely to the fuel cutoff position BEFORE attempting to start it, so you don't have an "engine runaway"!
