1942 LA transmission remove

Hey there! I have a friend who is trying to remove the transmission from his 1942 LA John Deere. He has all the bolts removed that attach the transmission to the rear housing. It seems like the tranny should just slip right off, but it does not. We can get it so far and it just sort of rocks back and forth and springs back. It has 2 dowel pins for alignment purposes. I am a Ford man myself and have never played with JD at all. We are afraid to put too much pressure prying around in fear of breaking the housing. Calling ALL John Deere pros! We need your help! Thanks for any information! Maybe jts just stuck on those dowel pins and needs a little grunt work?

Thanks for the reply! We can pry the tranny past the locating dowels but when we remove the pry bars the unit springs back. We are now thinking maybe we have to remove the rear axles to let the ring gear and everything come out as a unit. Are we thinking correctly or no?

did you take the rocker shaft out for the brakes and clutch, it will not come out without taking it loose and sliding to one side, as stated, you have to twist
transmission, it is a bugger.

I assume you pulled the axles.

Again, please remember the differential is built into the transmission, you need to pull the axles out.

Hey thanks for the help! We were starting to think maybe the axles would have to come out, but now we know for sure thanks to the very helpful advice! Thanks again guys! We will get right on it and hopefully it will be done for the Dacusville farm shoe this weekend September first and 2nd!

Yes I was not thinking when I replied at first. Both rear drive cases have to come off so you can get the axles out. Also second in removing the drain plug from the rear differential as well.
