Tire ply 1010RS rear tires

My 1010RS needs rear tires. The dry rot finally got the best of them. Local tire dealer has 8 ply BKT tr-135 tires or Carlisle 6 ply tires. The Carlisle tire weighs more, has a lower load rating, and actually costs more. Currently the tractor has 4 ply tires so either tire is an upgrade. I don’t think I need 8 ply on a 1010 but it seems like a better choice. I already have new BKT’s on the front and they have worn very well. Limited paved road use, tire chains in the winter if needed snowblowing, cultivating, plowing and discing are the primary use. Any thoughts?

To me it is
#1 cost
#2 where made
#3 how well the tire brand rates if you can find that info

Either way I'll buy mad In U.S.A. before I buy made in China

My guess is if you look at those tires the
6 ply is rated & it's a 4 ply. The 8 will
actually be 6. Wasn't like that in the old
days. I would go with the 8 ply.

I would not go with the BKT's.
In 5 years they will be weather checked.

I would rather go with an Firestone made tire and less ply's than the BKT's.

I do not know anything about the Carlisle.

It's your money and you need to be comfortable with what you spend.

Well like the last tire I had to get new for a tractor I about fell over when I read on it made In the U.S.A. and it took the guy 2 days to find one but it is an obsolete size any more as in 4>00X15 and it was the only one he found and only place that had them

Here are the specs:
8 ply BKTs made in India for $213 each
8 ply Firestone SAT II’s for $257 each
6 ply Carlisle $335 each
Michelin agribib radials for $600
There is also radial Firestone choice for around $550, a cheaper BKT for under $200 and a cheaper Carlisle around $240.

I know nothing of Carlisle tires. We have BKT’s on the 7400 and 6200 and so far they are good but only in year 2 and 3. Lots of people run SAT II Firestone’s.

The SAT II’s are about top of my price range with a new tube. If I can get the wife to agree that I think is my best choice. If not the BKT 8-ply is next.

I think the Firestone’s are US made. Carlisle is US based but couldn’t confirm their Ag tires are made here. Their lawn mower and atv tires are though.

I think the last tractor tire I got which was a front tire in a hard to find size was a Carlisle brand and made In the U.S.A. 4:00X15 3 rib

That’s what I was thinking. The ones on there are old Goodyears, maybe originals. The way they are peeling almost looks like a recap which is a bit weird.

Nobody is lying to anyone - it's just a matter of knowing what is meant by the terms. The "ply rating" of a tire has nothing to do with how many actual plies it contains, how thick the tire is, or anything else like that. The only thing it relates to is the maximum air pressure the tire can withstand and thus the maximum load it can carry. The ply rating comes from the early days when the plies were made of cotton and there actually were 4, 6, or 8 true plies. When tires switched to far stronger synthetic materials they could get the same strength with just one or two plies. The ply count then became the ply rating so the two styles could be compared.

Hi,
I've used Carlisle for years. Good tire made here at a decent price. I like them because they offer the old Armstrong tire in the 45 degree tread that looks nice on my old tractors. Good Luck!

Goodyear tractor tires were sort of known to have that peeling issue. I have seen it several times and a guy who worked at a tire shop I went to school with also sad he saw that alot.
