John Deere 400 Tractor

Hydraulic fluid is getting into the oil pan, when engine is running it flows out the dip stick tube. Hydraulic oil gone from rear reservoir.
Any idea?

John Deere used the 400 designation for three different tractors, garden, industrial, and a China edition. Is yours an industrial model? gas or diesel engine? If diesel are you sure it is hydraulic oil, not diesel in the oil pan? The transfer pump can leak into the engine (gas or diesel) and there are umbrella seals on at least some of the diesel injection pump drive shafts that can fail and let diesel into the oil pan. On the industrials I believe the hydraulic pump is driven by a shaft from the crank, not direct mounted to the engine so a failed seal wouldn't put hydraulic into the oil pan. Just some thoughts.

It is a gas powered industrial, the hydraulic pump is shaft driven and mounted on front end, but there is a oil cooler up front and behind that some kind of manifold. I also read something about a power steering pump seal might also oil to leak into crank case.

the oil cooler for the hydraulic oil is beside the radiator and is air to oil, not coolant to oil, so that should not be it; if it was coolant to oil you would see oil in your radiator. If you have power steering that pump is mounted on the front of the engine so yes it could be the source. Not sure what you are seeing for a manifold, but unless it brings the hydraulic oil in contact with a component of the engine oil system, the oils should not be able to cross over.

Ditto what Jim.ME statedd about power steering pump leaking hyd oil into engine. PS pump if tractor serial number is between 10001-45199 is mounted on RH frt of engine. Pump shaft seal(key 21) is part number AR53048 & seal spec's are shown below.

If you don't have a printed parts catalog, you can go on line to JDParts Homepage to access the parts catalog (PC973) for your tractor. It has the information for the pump drawing Tx Jim posted. You can also check part numbers there and get details like the seal info Tx Jim posted.

If it needs more than just the seal. Item 13, the base (p/n AR39058) says it includes bushings, pins, and ball. Checking that part number it came up as "NLA, contact your dealer for options". The dealer might be able to get info on the bushings, which do not show as separate parts in the drawing. If you take it apart, you might be able to find or have made bushings to fit. FYI, item 20 the shaft shows as available for about $280.00 and item 28, the whole pump, is about 2500.00. A good used pump is and option.

If you don't have manuals, I suggest you check this site's store and/or eBay for the John Deere operators and service/technical manuals (the parts catalog which is available for access on line) for your tractor.
