potential 720 diesel wide front purchase

Hello all, I am almost finished up with a deal on a John Deere 720 Diesel wide front, guy is reasonable on his pricing but its gonna need the usual tires repaint body work etc but both the pony motor and tractor start and run with no smoke. Now the only thing that is really holding me back from finalizing the deal is when he started it up it went to a irregular idle where it would idle up then down. I want to purchase it but I swore I would never purchase another tractor that needs to have the engine gone through, espically if its a diesel. Any advice or potential issues would be greatly appreciated..

sound to me like the governor linkage needs to be adjusted. the john deere service manual goes over the adjustment procedure pretty good. i have found though that by adjusting the governor lever which is whats on the left side of the block adjusted by loosening the 5/16 nut (1/2" wrench) on top and turning the bolt from the under side with a screw driver will usually smooth them out. this has worked on the 2 tractors that i have monkeyed with so could be as simple as that or could be something deeper in the governor or linkage. if engine runs good otherwise i don't think you would have to be worried about the engine itself.
