JD 4010 Gas Cold Starting

I'm looking for people's experiences with JD 4010 Gas and
cold starting. I'm looking at one to get and keep at a stack
yard we have that has no power at it to plug in a block heater.
It runs very well and is well maintained, just didn't know how
they did in the cold.

When they were new 3010 and 4020 gas were good cold starters, a 4010 should be similar. If the single battery was good, they would start easily at -10F (Iowa cold) without a block heater or battery charger. About the same as a pickup of that day with a manual choke, a little better than the cars with automatic chokes. If I remember right, 1/4 throttle, below zeroF pull the choke cable out to fully close the choke, crank the starter until the engine it fires once, keep cranking and decrease the choke until the engine is running. As it warms up, keep pushing in the choke to keep it running smoothly until the choke is fully open (cable in).

There is an intake manifold heat block that should be flipped to the heat position (no holes showing) in cold weather. Check that the ignition resister bypass works to deliver full battery voltage to the coil when the starter is turning.

"Ingrid", my gas 4020 snowblowing tractor, is a darned good (North Dakota cold) winter starter. I usually plug her in if I plan to use her, but she has started at ten or fifteen below when need quickly, WITHOUT being plugged in.

Never had a gas 4010, though.

And "Ingrid" is a powershift, with a transmission disconnect clutch.
