Tractor question

Hi. I was wondering if anybody knows where (in Michigan), I could get a John Deere tractor (LA, M, 1010, or something similar), To use for yard work. I only have $600 to spend. Thanks!

Sorry but I think you're going to need a bigger budget. Around here $600 wouldn't hardly buy a running lawnmower.

You are going to have to add at least a 1 in front of your $600 to get something that runs, isn't in immediate need of some major repair or maintenance and whatnot.

Unless your a person like me and I specialize in bringing old dead tractor back to life and into service again you will not find one for that. Yes I have spent a lot less then that on tractor and have a good many that I did bring back to life but for $600 your not likely to find anything but what most would call scrap iron. Save your $$ till you have $2000 plus and even then do a lot of homework before you buy one.

Just an example the 1010 and 2010 JD tractor while if running are ok but if they break down can become money pits fast because they where poorly designed and many parts are hard to come by.

I'm only 17 so that's all the money I have. I was just wondering if there was somebody selling them in my price range
(I had herd that prices were going down but apparently not).

By the way, I'm pretty good at fixing tractor, so I'm not looking for one that's perfect. I just wanted something to do some work with at my house and help some of the neighbors. Thanks Anyway.

Well then at your age you need to also think about not going with just Green and yellow. Many times the green and yellow paint tends to cost a person more then say the old Ford gray or Farmall red. Shoot I have one or 2 old Farmall tractors I would sell for around $600. Or even a Case VAC for around that

I don't know what yard work you want to do ? but of those 3 listed the 1010 would be best because of a 3 pt. hitch. But I'd not buy one of those for several reasons and main one is lack of parts supplies. I'd go with the M but even a parts tractor could be worth more than you have at this moment.
I agree with OLD as to look at some other brands may get you more for less money. I see lots of stuff on craigslist with what must be pretty high prices because they are always on there and must never sell ? Local word of mouth advertising and listing a want ad in any cheap of free local places like in stores that have bulletin boards at the entrances. Don't be affraid to look at something and make an offer and tell them that's all you have. You may just end up with it.

You should be able to find a 110, 112 or 140 lawn and garden tractor with a mower deck for around $600. An unstyled model B or A might be the next closest to that price range (late 1930's hand start farm tractor). You might want to look at other brands to meet that price.

What type of "yard work": mowing lawn; plowing garden; clearing snow; etc?
