JD 420 Axle Leaks

My newly purchased 420, after driving it around my neighborhood (not a work tractor...parades, just to own) started leaking trans and axle fluid
on the right side. Drove it again today and leak is more prominent, splatters on inside wheel rim. Once tractor stops leak persists ffor short
period and then stops. Is this a seal issue or should I try to tighten the 4 bolts at the end of the axle? If a seal what is the repair? I do not have
the proper garage or equipment to tackle this on my own. We have a local JD dealer and I am told shop rate is 75/hr. Other than the leak,
tractor looks and runs very well. Thanks...

Jack the tractor up. Remove wheel and wheel hub from the axle. Remove the four bolts you are talking about. There is a seal in there you can replace. Good luck.

Search for JDPARTS Homepage. That will take you to John Deere's website where you can get free access to the on line parts book for your tractor. Enter 420 where it asks for the model number. When you get to the page that shows a number of equipment types with the 420 designation pick the 420 and 430 tractor parts catalog PC505. You will find the oil seal number in the final drive section. Pick the pages for your 420 series (W, T, U, or S). You can then go to John Deere to get it or have a bearing house or parts store cross reference the JD number.

If you have the parts catalog downloaded go to page 35-6, 35-7 I think you'll see that the seal you are looking for will be there AM 939 T. Looks like the same seal was used for most of the 420's
