JD 1020 value

I'm looking at a JD 1020 and wondering if
it's worth $1800+$500 for loader. The
tractor has a scored crankshaft. I don't
have specifics about the degree of scoring
but I'd assume the worst.
Other option is an MM 335 with loader at
$1900

Crankshaft repair indicates engine must be removed to repair correctly. I think $1800 plus crankshaft grinding/overhaul kit/labor is more than I would want to spend on a gasoline powered 1020

You will have the price of a good one in it when finished and the tractor does not look real good anyway. Not running there could also be other things wrong as well. The plus side would be that you would have a good engine that would last for years if you rebuilt it. I myself would pass. Tom

I bought a real nice 1020 at an auction for $4300,new tires and nice paint, have used it for a couple of years now,I think the loader would be worth $1000 to $1500 easy if its a 48 loader which is a quick detach type, repairs would require engine removal and you would probably want to put in pistons and liners and maybe a valve job at that point so you're talking another $3000-4000 in parts if you can do it yourself, parting out the tractor would be the best option.

Offer them $ 500 for the whole works ! Then you may pick up a diesel engine or another gas and just swap out the engine instead of rebuilding it.

Depends a lot on the loader and the condition of the hydraulics/brake pads. The loader might be a nice 145, or 48 model. I'd assume the worst and treat it as a parts tractor. Maybe swap the loader and the nice straight front & rear R&P axles onto a tractor in better condition and resell/scrap the remainder without loosing much money on the deal. Make sure the loader includes a set of engine side frames that carries the stress of a loader instead of the engine block. Is the tractor an HU (high utility) with 38 inch rear wheels?

I have a 1020 and it is the best 40HP tractor available. Beats the crap out of those Ford 8ns' from years past. They are easy to work on and is easily worth the $1800. Any engine builder can work on it. It is just a big straight cyl chevy. There is no need to remove the engine unless there is a crank problem. The long axles are for duels, cut them off if they stick out too far.
Mine is a '75' with power everything with full remote hydraulics and independent PTO. Looks like the one in the pic.

It's a model 37 loader. The journal at the 3rd rod is scored over 0.010. I think it's been ground before so I think it'd need to be replaced.
