John Deere 70

Well not want I wanted to see cracked
flywheel on my John Deere 70 gas tractor now
what's my options? Used flywheel if I can
find one thanks Howard

I had the same problem and you are probably not over the not liking it. Mine was cracked because sometime before I got it the flywheel was just a little loose and wore the splines just a tiny bit. This was discovered at some point and the flywheel tightened on the ever-so-slightly worn splines. The flywheel didn't have enough give to tighten on the splines and - pop. If this is the case with yours it was the splines that caused the problem, not the flywheel. Putting a different one on it will cause it to crack too. The dead-on solution is having your flywheel changed to a Taper-lock hub, or getting an entire Taper-lock flywheel. I'm not sure what the criteria is for having a hub installed on your flywheel vs entire new wheel. I had to get a whole new one and it was a big hit financially. Hope someone else chimes in with more detail. PS. Cornbread and beans for 6 months isn't that bad . . .

It was fine when I got it running for the first time because everyone said make sure you check the flywheel then I ran it on my 42 combine all day back on the 4fh of July check it out today and it's cracked Thanks Howard

Used flywheel will probably not work if your crankshaft splines are worn. They will not install a taperlock hub in a cracked flywheel ....so it's BOAT time (break out another thousand) for a new taperlock flywheel. Make sure you check the ring gear and replace it if necessary.

The gear on the circumference of the flywheel that engages with the starter gear. They tend to wear in a certain section of the ring gear so 90 % of the teeth may be ok, but the other 10% are worn.

Ok got it thanks I will probably go with a new taper Lock flywheel this tractor runs really well did you have to modify your flywheel cover to fit over it?

If the taperlock is installed properly and the crank end play is correct the cover will fit as original. If everything is not right people put spacers in to move the cover out. Doesn't look good....try to get the settings right so spacers are not needed. You might want to check the cost of buying a used, non-cracked flywheel and have a taperlock hub installed. Depending on where you live the cost of shipping the flywheel to Tn. and then returning it may be prohibitive. Here in Wi/Mn you can have a hub installed in a good used flywheel for ~$300.
