6068 Deere Ring Gap

Anybody have the piston ring end gap for this engine? I downloaded and printed the deere manual for it. I've read through the piston/ring section twice and I see no mention of end gap. It just says to not reuse rings. I'm guessing it just assumes end gap will be correct?

The kit we got is aftermarket and I think the gaps are too tight. Around .007 on the top and oil ring. Second was bigger at .025 I think.

I talked to machine shop that supplied the kit. He couldn't find the exact engine, but similar 6.8 showed .013 to .023 for top and oil ring. .030 to .039 on second ring. Seems odd to me that the second ring would be so much bigger....

Can somebody confirm these specs are right before I start filing? Just for giggles, I checked old rings in an old liner. Top 2 were.070 and oil ring was .040.

the common spec. for ring end gaps is .003-.004 for every inch of cylinder bore. if you were comparing old rings to new rings you must install the old rings at the botttom of sleeve where there is no wear. i have never had to file new rings on any engine. i check them and they are within the spec.
i am not familiar with that engine , and it does seam odd the second ring has more gap. take it your replacing the liners also.
 
New liners as well. I'm with you, never had to file rings either. .007" on a 4" plus bore scares me though. I only checked old rings to see if the second one had a wider gap than the other two. Since It didnt, I'm kind of second guessing what I was told although the new rings seem to confirm it. They are just tighter than what machine shop said they should be.
 
for a 4" bore i would not be comfortable with .007... at least double that sounds a lot better. might bind up and break a ring.
 
Deere kit comes with rings on pistons and already installed in sleeves doesn't want you to remove them just push the piston down far enough to slip the wrist pin ,probably why there's no spec published
 
.007 sounds way too tight to me.For the top ring in that size bore,I would like to see closer to .020.
The last engine we overhauled, an 855 model NTC444 with Cummins kit had two cylinders with too tight of rings.
With the lack of quality in parts the last couple of years,we have been checking every crank bearing for clearance,and every ring for clearance,and it does not seem to be much different OEM or aftermarket any more!
 
What brand is the kit i have used lots of deere and rellance never check ring gap. i would send that set back before you in trouble
