JD MT Wiring Question

I am in the process of rewiring my MT. On the back of the combination switch, the field resistor is broken in half. It doesn't look repairable. I saw them online for $15-20. There is nothing currently hooked up to mine. What are the two terminals that this connects between used for? My thought is for headlights. Mine are missing and I want to add them back.

My tractor is all original, 6V with generator. I had the generator and cutout tested/fixed so I should be good to go.

With headlites "OFF", the resistor is in the generator's "Field" circuit, and charging rate is low.

When headlites are switched "ON", resistor gets bypassed, making for more field current and more generator output.

If you search around on here James Howell has posted a great diagram in the past of the back of the switch for the M series. I have found it a few times by searching. It is a great reference.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Bob[/b:654c4848f0]'s statement "[i:654c4848f0]the resistor is in the generator's "Field" circuit[/i:654c4848f0]".

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]Lamps and Wiring[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note that one end of the white wire is connected to the resistor terminal on the ignition switch and the other end is connected to the generator field terminal.

Take a look at the photo below of the original ignition switch on "Rusty" one of our 1951 MTs.

Note that one end of the green wire is connected to the flood lite terminal on the ignition switch and the other end is connected to the front lights.
