730 gas miss

our 730 will miss on 2, if i pull the plug wire out of the distributor cap and hold it against the cap right at the to where wire goes in it will shoot the spark up to the wire and fire, i can then put wire back down like its suppose to be and it will keep firing but drops that side when a load is applied. what should i check first? i haven't spent any time checking condition of wire end or cap but cap has been replaced in the last year and a half and the wires aren't that old either. has pertronix electronic ignition and coil, copper wires, and autolite 3116 plugs. i have been told that carbon core plug wires should be used with the pertronix systems but i'm not sure why.

You need to change the plug wires to resistant wires. You going to ruin your Solid state ignition if you don't. The resistant wires make there be more voltage at the spark plug. Your holding the wire away from the plug is doing the same thing and that is why it starts firing then.

I would recommend using the wires that your ignition system recommends.

If you switch cylinders with the spark plug does the problem follow the plug or stay with the cylinder? I could just be a bad plug.

Missing under load is usually plugs, even though they look good.
Try switching sides with them.

I have a 1952 60 that I tractor pull with. One of the first things I did when I purchased it was put petronics Electronics in it. I also put in stainless steel plug wires at that time. It runs great, has never missed a beat since then. That was four years ago. I've also been able to increase the spark plug gap to 0.0050 with increased power output.

IMHO, missing under load can be anything on the secondary ignition, as load increases the compression pressures which increase the voltage required to jump the plug gap This means cap, rotor, wires and plugs are all suspect, I would not narrow it down to plugs.
