OK, there are styled or un styled L's, but only styled LA's.

I think the L's came with Hercules engines and the LA's with JD engines, you can tell them apart by the governor and the bell housing.

An L should have 22 inch steel center rear wheels. An LA should have 24 inch cast center wheels.
The serial number plate is on the rear axle to the right of the differential. Exactly where your feet will drag across it when getting off.

The "Ls" came with both engines, first was the Hercules and when the war started JD started using their own engine. Starting with s/n 644000 was the JD with its own engine.

We had a guy trade-in an LA once at our dealership. He took a torch and cut it into two pieces so it would fit in the back of his pickup truck. I can say for sure that one had hollow tubes. I had to weld it back together.

Dealer near is having his 50th anniversary. He gets a lot of old tractors in. He just sells them as-is and never seems to work on them. He has an L or LA out there right now. LAs were often two-tone color but I guess you cannot count on that for ID. Northern area of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Dons Tractor in Alpena. Started out as a Ford tractor dealer, then New Holland, and now all kinds of stuff. Even Honda bikes and four wheelers. Anything for a buck, I guess.

An L collector who has scrapped quite a few of them told me that there are some general rules about the hollow versus solid pipe frames, but there are a lot of exceptions.
