early JD 70 gas

Would the value of an early JD 70 be much different than a later one I am talking about a later one like #34 runs good with very good and tires are ok also has new manifolds installed.

In our area (Mn,Wi) the early 70 gas models (1953/1954)are the least desirable because they have manual steering. Factory power steering was not available until late in the 1954 model year around serial number ~7014000. Also, if they have transmission driven pto versus live pto they are less desirable. Check the flywheel on the 70 as well as 3rd gear in the transmission as these were problem areas for the JD 70's.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Blksmok[/b:654c4848f0] especially on the power steering.

Even though they have the larger, four-spoke steering wheel, they can be difficult to turn in certain situations.

We paid $2500 for "<a href="https://youtu.be/iDlItA8uyyM">15</a>" our very early (7000014) 1953 Model 70 gas.

We paid $1800 for "<a href="https://youtu.be/wEgYGdY4lWo">1011</a>" our other early (7001011) 1953 Model 70 gas.

Hope this helps.

I bought this one a couple of years ago for $900.00 Didn't run, sat outside, tank was full of rust so they had goobered a red plastic gas tank to the side of it for fuel. No P/S, but turns nicely if the front end and pedestal are greased up. I would like to find a newer one that has P/S, but wouldn't trade this one for anything. Very sound, reliable tractor. Lots of power. I would say "yes" to your question that a newer one is a bit more valuable mainly because of the P/S, but that would depend on the guy driving it, mainly.

I do as well. Strong as an ox. This one had had the rotor installed 180 degrees off and the previous owner couldn't ever get it to start, so it just sat for 4-5 years after they had bought it in Kansas. They thought it wasn't starting because of bad/old gas. They were trying to pull start it for buyers on CL and it would occasionally "pop", so they thought they were getting spark and some gas, but no luck on starting. Clutch was hot enough you could fry an egg on it when I got there. Got it home, checked the plugs and wires, and saw the rotor was in backwards, so turned it around and it didn't even spin one full turn and fired right up. I used this one occasionally with a rear blade doing the road and it's wonderful tractor.

I had a 70 years ago and didn't like it much because it was geared to high. First gear in the 70 felt like second gear in my 630, and second felt like third in my 630. Just to fasty for me. Some old timer told me that the 70 was designed with higher gear ratios for work on the open flat plains in the mid west where you want to plow faster then a crawl.

Looks very nice... but you took the Char Lynn power steering off? Those are good units- in my opinion better than Deere's factory units for a 70.

1954 with char lynn power steering. This tractor spent most of it's life feeding cows. It is retired now and used only occasionally.

Yes, I took it off. It probably worked, but the hoses were shot and it was leaking all over everywhere. Whoever installed that didn't do a very good job and it looked pretty cobbled. I should probably get that put on Ebay as the pump and motor are just sitting here in a box.

(quoted from post at 16:12:06 03/30/17) I might be interested...
Busy today, but will take some pictures of the power steering stuff I took off and post it this weekend for you to take a look at. Better for someone to take it and get some use out of it vs. sitting here in a box.

Thanks,
