update on 2550 hydraulics

Okay, I drained the oil and the screen was plugged with "flakes" and coated with "snot" looking slime. I plan to flush trans housing with diesel before filling with oil. Should I install Sump screen to catch debris loosened by flushing? I don't want junk to get into oil passage. Thanks for all replies. doorman

Slime in hyd oil could be brake pads or from water/dirt. Do not operate tractor without having screen & hyd filter in place. I've read about magnets being placed in bottom of trans case to help catch metal particles.

If your filter/screen is covered with flakes of gold and brown colored stuff then your rear brakes are falling apart. Just flushing it out will be a short term "fix" at the best. If you plan on keeping the tractor repair the brakes NOW not later. Read the earlier post by " [email protected]" HE has ruined his complete hydraulic system as a result of poor dealership advice and keeping running the tractor.

Now if your talking about a SMALL amount of flakes than your MIGHT be OK but if they are covering the entire screen then its brake time. Your comment of being "covered with flakes" leads me to believe you only went looking at the sump screen after your hydraulics quit working correctly???? If that is the case QUIT using the tractor NOW. Your brakes are gone!!! The repair will only get more costly if you keep running it. Brakes only is not that bad of a cost, especially if you can do the job yourself. Keep running it and you can ruin just about everything in the hydraulic system. The last Mannheim designed tractor I repaired that had been ran that long cost over $8K to get it all repaired.

As for the screen being in while flushing. I never have. Your going to be getting flow out the open screen hole and also the drain plugs holes. There would be little if any thing get into the charge pump circuit that has not already been there. This screen just stops the LARGE stuff the fine stuff still goes through the transmission/charge pump. This is another reason to repair anything that is causing particles ,large or small, in the transmission sump as even small particles will ruin the charge pump.

The 2550 I have had this issue last year. The one at my place has a loader as well. Wasn't sure if it had Hyguard in it or not or what even. I didn't have an imploded filter but had some gold looking flakes in the sump screen that were like a gasket or sealer type material. A few folks looked at the pictures on here and it was a split between some gasket material or break lining. The PTO is out so it is PTO brake material and I am sure the reqular brakes are falling apart.

JDSeller is going to scold me, but we drained all the fluids, flushed, new filters, and have been running it. We barely put 25 hours a year on this tractor. It does a little bit of dirt moving and unloads a few ag-bags of fert/lime/feed per year. The decision was made on our end knowing the issue, value of the tractor, and cost to fix to run it, keep the fluids clean, and when it dies so be it. We aren't going to put a ton into it's care and we get out of it what we get.
