5020 questions

OK you gents and ladies, need some info. I was offered a 5020 today for 3500 and need to know what to look for when I go to look at it. I think it is the row crop model with the narrow fenders, what are some of the things I need to look for specifically? I know location matters a lot and this one is less than 10 miles from the house. I think it has the Walden blade on the front too. any help, advise, and comments welcome. And no I will no tell you where it is so you can take it so I don't get stuck with something I don't need....I know tires are a major expense to look at, what are some of the other things.

If the main bearings are spun because the oil pump drive failed and the operator did not notice in time. A late 619 with the improved oil drive is an almost bolt in swap.

Have him take your vehicle the 10 miles to your home and wait there for the money. If it makes it 10 mi and everything is normal, then it's probably worth the $ 3500. Then pay him and take him home. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain . Nothing wrong with a 10 mile test drive when you are going to drop him $ 3500 at the end of it. If he declines then walk. There's probably a good reason. Take the diagnostic advice you get on here and use it to start with at initial inspection. Then take the drive. If he has nothing to hide then should be no problem...right?

$3500 doesn't buy much. The normal obvious things tires how it runs and drives blowby can do water strip test.Nice flat top fenders sell well but if it needs much work the 5020 is not a real desireable tractor and the price of steel at $25 a ton doesn't help.

Larry: Is it the 5020 and the 5010 both that have weak PTO's ? I can't recall if it was both or not ? But defiantly one does or both. They won't handle heavy work like a tub grinder.

I don't think I would travel 1/2 hour one way without at least a 10 percent non-refundable deposit.

I,ve sold 8 tractors in the last two yrs and would have done the "10 mile thing" with any one of them. Helps if ya only sell good tractors. Like I said tho, the price must be established before the trip. Not too often that they are within driving distance like this is. When they are then that's the fair way for both.

Above all the normal stuff like water in the oil etc, I'd make sure the shift linkage is good, and it moves in all gears. You can drop a lot of $ in a 5020 transmission. Or engine. Or clutch. Most everything on a 5020 will be priced 50 to 100% more than on a 4020 when it comes to parts. More and more stuff is hard to find used and often unavailable new.

As far as the PTO goes, that part is very rugged. We owned two of those girls, did a LOT of PTO work with them- forage harvesters in the old days, baggers, blowers, grain vacs more recently- and never had a bit of trouble.

THey are neat tractors, but look carefully. I'm not sure you can pay too little.
