John Deere B Timing Marks

1952 John Deere B. I recently had the crankshaft Machined and Babbit Rods redone. When I removed the crankshaft I marked with a paint pen the Crank Gear and Cam Gear. The Crankshaft came back looking like brand new but I cannot see the dented timing mark and of course my paint mark is gone. If I set the crank No.1 Forward to mimick TDC and the Key Way for Crank Gear is at the 12 oclock position what position would the mark be in. Can anyone verify? I saw a picture of a crank gear on the internet and it looked like it was around the 10 Oclock position or 2 teeth counter clockwise from the key way groove. Hoping someone could help me out with this.

Thanks

I've been into more engines than I care to remember, and have NEVER found a single one in which I could not find the timing marks. (NOT to say that that can't happen, IDK?)

Yet, there are MANY posts on here about missing timing marks.

My humble advice is to take another, careful look 'til you find the factory marks.

I had the same situation on a Unstyled G several years ago. The only method of setting the valve timing is to use the LH Exhaust Open mark on the flywheel. The left exhaust should just move approximately .050. You will need to set a dial indicator on the face of the crank case to get a good reading. The steps are outlined in most I&T service manuals.

Andrew You will need to wind up with the crankshaft on TDC and the governor distributor drive coupling horizontal unless some tractor puller like me retarded the governor one tooth to retard the mag timing. I am thinking there are 4 different ways the drive will be horizontal but can use the exhaust opening to finalize it. Lynn
