51 a powertrol leaking oil

for the last 2 years I have been losing hydraulic oil. but it has not leaking in the ground. it leaks and I put in more. so today I checked the rearend and you gested it its over full. my hydraulic is going into the rear end. how is it giting in there? thanks Bob

There're 3 places where hyd. oil can leak into the rear end.
1. The cup or packing on the rockshaft piston.
2. The gasket between the rockshaft piston cylinder and the rockshaft housing.
3. The sealing washers on the pto shaft where it passes through the back of the rockshaft housing.

The first one can be fixed by removing the Powr-Trol valve body.
The other 2 require removal of the rockshaft housing.

Go to jdparts.com and look at page 124 of PC675.

Using Pete's list.... For leak #2 to be the problem, the rockshaft has to be getting used to push the oil up there before it can leak out. It can't leak oil into the gear case if oil was never pumped IN when you were using the rockshaft. Leak 2 can also make the hydraulic oil disappear quite quickly! For example if the RS cylinder gasket is blown the rockshaft won't stay in the riased position & if you lay on the operating handle it will be squirting oil past the blown gasket at 750+/- PSI which can gobble a couple quarts pretty quickly!

If you do not and have not used the rockshaft but only use the original remote cylinder outlet ports out the rear and it still looses the hydraulic oil or if it looses the hydrauliic oil EVEN WHEN SITTING UNUSED (such as over the winter) the problem is likely behind door number 3.

Hope that helps.

I happen to have JD PC -675 catalogue open:

Thanks Al and pete. I only use the remote hydraulics. I can fill it up and 1-2 months later I can only lift the loader about 3-4 foot. now if I put on my 801 3 point and use the mower it will creep down very very slow. I have a spare back cover with the powertrol and pump.if this is not a ez fix ill just witch them out. thanks for the help guy. thanks Bob

"now if I put on my 801 3 point and use the mower it will creep down very very slow."

Bob - On my JD50, I found some of the bolts were only finger tight that held #4 cylinder to #20 housing (in JohnDeere D's parts drawing). Seems like they are supposed to be torqued at 150 ft lbs, but check before you use that number.

Service manual SM 2011 has details for repair.
