upper water pipe gasket

I noticed I have a small leak where the upper water pipe bolts to the head. I ordered a new gasket from JD. Do you guys suggest spraying that gasket with that copper gasket spray like you use on head gaskets? I have a shop manual coming so I will get the torque specs from it. Thanks guys.

Red RTV silicone will work. Make sure that the mating surfaces are NOT all pitted and rough. You can use a board with wet/dry sandpaper (wet is better) on the fixed portion and a good flat surface for the removable part. HTH.

I usually wrap a big flat file with some emery cloth and work it down to a fine grit. The removable part run over a flat piece of iron with 320 or so grit on tip of it. Sounds like we are talking the same proceedure. Thanks guys.

That's OK if you want them glued down. I like to be able
to remove something without having to spend extra time
scraping and replacing the gasket.
For example I just flushed the cooling system on a truck.
Removed the t-stat first and coated new gasket with silicone.
After drying I reinstalled the housing to run flush for a few
days. Then reinstalled the t-stat without having to use another
gasket.
I very seldom use Permatex except on loadshaft seals. I guess I'm
just too lazy or tired.
